The Faculty of Humanities employs just under a thousand employees, and approximately 8,000 students study there. The Department of History, European Studies & Religious Studies is currently looking for a Full Professor of European Studies, with a focus on EU Law in the Humanities. What are you going to do?Context of the chair We are looking for candidates pursuing innovative research in Law and the Humanities, with a proven track record of interdisciplinary research and teaching. The Chair’s research should contribute to academic and public debates on timely topics such as the rule of law in Europe, Next generation EU and Social Europe, reforming the EU asylum system, or the European Green Deal, combining legal perspectives with cultural, historical and political enquiry. The chair holder will be asked to develop a cogent vision of the relevance of EU Law in the Humanities and to propose an inspiring agenda that positions legal scholarship within a Humanities faculty. Teaching The teaching tasks of the Chair will primarily be focused in the Law Major and Minor of the BA programme in European Studies, but you will also be expected to contribute to the wider teaching of the Department at both BA and MA levels, in particular in the MA in European Policy. Research The successful candidate will conduct research within the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES), one of the five research schools of the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research. ARTES combines Humanities, Law, and also Social Sciences to the study of Europe and other world regions. The professor is expected to provide research leadership on EU Law in the Humanities in the field of European Studies. Possible research themes of the Chair in European Studies with a focus on EU Law in the Humanities are: the rule of law in Europe, Next Generation EU and Social Europe, reforming the EU asylum system, or the European Green Deal. These research themes can be developed in the context of Europe and the EU, or other world regions that have relations with the EU and its legal and regulatory frameworks. The Chair will be key to building a sustainable research culture in EU Law in the Humanities in ARTES. Crucial for this is attracting external research funding, supporting and initiating large grant applications together with colleagues, as well as a strong network of academic and societal stakeholders. The Capacity Group of European Studies in the Department of History, European Studies, and Religious Studies invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Heritage of Social Europe. We are looking for a scholar whose research combines approaches from political history and critical heritage studies, engaging with the enduring material and immaterial heritage as well as intangible heritage practices of Social Europe and its influence on contemporary political and social debates and policies. Based in the capacity group of European Studies, the candidate’s research will illuminate how 20th century’s historical developments in European politics and policy have enduring effects in the present as objects, narratives, memories and affects related to Social Europe become heritagized. Possible research areas are the development of the European welfare state in the postwar decades and its imprint on political cultures and social policies in the European Union and its member states; the alleged demise of the welfare state since the 1980s and the surge in welfare nostalgia and nativism as a reaction to these changes as well as national and transnational solidarity movements building on ideas of social Europe. The Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA) is currently looking for a Full Professor of Greek and Latin Literatue in Context. What are you going to do?Context of the chair We are looking for an experienced candidate with a strong background in Classics and with a particular focus on current literary approaches. The successful candidate will be a member of the Capacity Group Greek and Latin Literature and Culture (GLTC) and in the future also the chair of this group. Research of this group focuses on classical literature from Homer to Late Antiquity and beyond, including the literary and cultural reception of the classical world in later periods. Important to its profile is the emphasis on contemporary methodologies and approaches to literature, e.g. cognitive (incl. cognitive-linguistic), narratological, digital, psychological or sociological. The Amsterdam research in the field of Classics is significant in particular because of its successful synthesis of modern linguistic and literary methods, in which language and literature are together approached from a cognitive and communicative perspective. The successful candidate is expected to work in the core area of Classics, but in a way that is grounded in modern literary theory and sensitive to contemporary academic and societal debates. It is expected that the successful postholder has a strong international profile and network, and a background in interdisciplinary collaborations. ASH integrates a variety of (inter)disciplinary perspectives, including history, history of art, literature and religious studies. It encourages collaborations between scholars along thematic lines (e.g. Religion, the City, Conflict), geographical focus (e.g. Mediterranean History, American Studies, Modern Germany) and in terms of period (e.g. Antiquity, the Middle Ages, Early Modern and Modern History). More specifically, the candidate will contribute to the current Style project of the group Classical (con)texts within ASH and also play a role in connecting the research of the Classicists with that of other research groups within ASH, such as those of ancient and digital historians and literary scholars.
