PhD Candidate DeepNL project: Numerical modelling and geophysical inversion for characterization of the Dutch subsurface
University of Twente, Enschede
The global initiative to complete the energy transition by 2040 puts tremendous pressure on governments and industries. The need for any nation to know the potential of its subsurface to meet the future demand for energy and raw materials, as well as its storage capacity (e.g. CO2, H2) and associated hazards (e.g. induced seismicity, subsidence), is more critical than ever for informing exploration efforts, strategic economic planning, environmental policies, and decision-makers. The Netherlands has invested a significant part of its GDP in data acquisition programs in the past 30 years. However, the formal integration and inversion of all available and complementary data (e.g. seismic, satellite, borehole, gravity, magnetic, etc.) have not been yet fully exploited for obtaining unifying, multi-parameter and internally consistent models of the subsurface at scales relevant for informing regional and nation-wide exploration efforts and strategic environmental planning. PhD student on Process Development of Green Steel Production
University of Twente, Enschede
The iron and steel industry are confronted with pressing challenges. Historically, the industry has heavily relied on carbon-intensive blast furnaces for iron-ore reduction, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. However, with global sustainability goals and stricter environmental regulations, there's a growing urgency for innovation. Tata Steel in the Netherlands is dedicated to revolutionizing iron manufacturing by transitioning from coal to gas-based direct reduction processes (DRI), utilizing hydrogen. This approach promises a substantial reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional blast furnace methods, aligning with the industry's commitment to environmental responsibility. To achieve these goals, it is imperative to understand the intricate chemical reactions occurring on the iron surfaces during the direct reduction process. This understanding is crucial for ensuring controlled product quality and throughput. Inconsistencies can lead to inefficiencies, increased energy consumption, and lower product quality, which the steel industry can ill afford. Our project focuses on developing accurate particle models, validated through experiments, and scaling it up to a comprehensive process model. This model will simulate industrial direct reduction shaft furnace processes under various operating conditions, including temperature, pressure, pellet chemistry, and gas composition when transitioning from natural gas to hydrogen based DRI production.Requirements: You have a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering with a solid background in reaction engineering, chemical processes, and separation technologiesYou have a high degree of responsibility and independence, while being able to collaborate with colleagues, researchers, and other staff membersYou have experience with experimental laboratory systemsYou have experience with modelling and simulation of (chemical) processes, ideally with the tools Aspen Plus, Aspen Custom Modeler, or equivalentYou are fluent in EnglishYou have good communication skills and can collaborate with external partners in regular meetings and work visitsSalary Benefits: You will be appointed on a fulltime position for four years. The university offers a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues in a stimulating scientific environment. The PhD salary is € 2.770 in the first year and increases to € 3.539 in the fourth year. The offer further involves a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8,3%, a solid pension scheme, a minimum of 29 holidays, and numerous professional and personal development programs. You will have a training program as part of the Twente Graduate School where you and your supervisors will determine a plan for a suitable education and supervision. PhD position on Development of a BioArtificial Kidney device consisting of living membranes for improved kidney replacement ...
University of Twente, Enschede
The department of Advanced Organ bioengineering and Therapeutics AOT of the Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW), has an opening of a 4-year PhD position on the “Development of a BioArtificial Kidney device consisting of living membranes for improved kidney replacement therapy, BAKtothe future. Patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD) need kidney replacement therapy (KRT) to survive, but current solutions (dialysis, kidney transplantation) are insufficient. The majority of ESKD patients is dependent on dialysis which places a heavy burden on their life. Removal of uremic toxins is inadequate, as all current dialysis therapies only mimic the filtration by kidney glomeruli, and do not replace any functionality of kidney tubules. BAKtotheFuture aims to develop a Bioartificial Kidney (BAK) that mimics tubular functionalities as an indispensable addition to current dialysis techniques. Our earlier studies have shown the proof of concept of a small scale BAK system consisting of living membranes of kidney proximal tubular cells cultured on polymeric hollow fibres. The current project aims to optimise the living membranes by using combined computational and experimental approaches and develop an upscaled BAK for in vivo validation in a rat model of kidney failure. This PhD project will be focused on novel strategies for achieving upscaling of the BAK. For achieving this, new types of artificial membranes would be developed, cell cultures protocols on these membranes would be optimised and uremic solutes removal from blood, by the new device, should be performed. The project will be performed in collaboration with researchers from Utrecht University (Prof. R. Masereeuw), Maastricht University (Dr. Carlier) and UMC Utrecht (Dr. K. Gerritsen).Requirements: We are looking for a candidate with a MSc degree in biomedical engineering, biomedical sciences, cell biology or related fields. The ideal candidate should have: An enthusiastic and highly motivated research attitude.Knowledge or experience in biomaterials – cell interactions and membrane technology, which are preferred. The ability to work independently and possess excellent theoretical, experimental, and writing skills.Excellent English writing and presentation skills.Experience mentoring BSc and MSc students and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary team members. It is therefore essential to demonstrate a willingness to look beyond disciplinary boundaries.Salary Benefits: Fulltime position for 4 yearsThe university offers a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues in a stimulating scientific environment. The starting salary, depending on your experience, ranges between € 2.770,- and € 3.539 ,-A holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.The number of holiday hours for full-time employment is 232 hours per calendar year.Work Hours: 40 hours per weekAddress: Drienerlolaan 5
PhD position on Calibration in Deep Learning for Zero Downtime in Cyber-Physical Systems
University of Twente, Enschede
The vacancy is focused on calibration in deep learning. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have demonstrated significant predictive capabilities across various domains including computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing. Existing sophisticated neural network architectures are frequently integrated into practical applications.
