PhD on Cybercriminal Frontiers of Social Engineering
TU Eindhoven University of Techology, Eindhoven
Cyber-attacks targeting human users are on the rise both in sophistication and scale. Social engineering comprises an evolving set of techniques and capabilities that allow attackers to target with increasing precision Internet users at scale. Novel AI-based content generation tools, such as LLMs employed by chatbots, are now increasingly available to criminals to run Internet-scale social engineering attacks over many vectors, from email to voice calls to Internet messaging. The availability of personal target information through social media and personal websites (Open Source INTelligence, or OSINT), combined with the capability to automatically process and synthetize this information, will soon allow attackers to deliver targeted social engineering attacks at Internet-scale. The criminal market ecosystem supporting attack capabilities is already picking up on new (criminal) business opportunities to enable the next generation of social engineering attacks. The question of whether our defenses are capable of addressing and mitigating these upcoming threats is an open, and critical, one. This PhD track is focused on identifying emerging threats in the social engineering landscape as enabled by the criminal ecosystem, identify gaps with current (technical or non-technical) defense techniques, and propose, implement, and demonstrate the efficacy of novel defenses addressing that gap. The Threat Analysis group within the SECurity cluster of TU Eindhoven, the Netherlands, is uniquely equipped to support this research providing multi-year experience and access to prominent criminal markets, and years-long experience on tailored social engineering techniques and experimentation. The group also provide direct access to the ESH-SOC (Eindhoven Security Hub Security Operation Center), an operative environment collecting threat data from third party IT infrastructures to provide information and an experimentation environment for the detection and investigation of incoming threats. This position offers a unique opportunity to conduct multi-disciplinary research in the field of cybersecurity, offering a broad view of attacker and defenders both from a privileged observation viewpoint (criminal markets access, ESH) and an experimental one. This position is part of the NWO/NWA INTERSECT project Grant Number NWA.1160.18.301. More information on the project is available here: https://intersct.nl/.Requirements: A master's degree (or an equivalent university degree) in Computer Science or equivalent. A strong background and interest in cybersecurity and propensity and natural interest towards multidisciplinary perspectives on open problems.Experience in empirical methods and statistical analysis is welcome, but not required. Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and interested in collaborating with industrial partners. Initiative and motivation to work independently. Interest in developing your teaching skills and coaching students. Fluent in spoken and written English (C2/C1 level).Salary Benefits: A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you: Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months. You will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks. Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, PhD scale (min. €2,770 max. €3,539). A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%. High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process. An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities. An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs. A Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates. Work Hours: 38 hours per weekAddress: De Rondom 70

PhD position in Knowledge Engineering for Scholarly Applications
University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam
Scholarly data encompasses all resources generated during scholarly endeavours, produced to accelerate knowledge within a specific domain, for example the biodiversity sciences or social history research. Knowledge systems are built to effectively integrate data within and across disciplines, on the one hand for the preservation of knowledge, and on the other for data synthesis and the discovery of new knowledge. Domain knowledge is challenging to engineer, aiming to model the real world, and the production of high-quality domain knowledge is challenging, as it requires domain expertise and thus a fruitful dialogue between domain expert and engineer. Historical data, even though paramount for understanding contemporary data, is especially challenging to handle for instance by (i) the differing scientific paradigms requiring one to deal with the representation of rich contexts, and (ii) the need for flexible knowledge organisation to handle changing scientific paradigms, as well as integration of data with other scientific domains. Recently, the introduction of AI techniques in such knowledge engineering workflows have become more prevalent. The central question of this project is what are efficient workflows that effectively employ domain experts, AI agents, and knowledge engineers in the engineering of scholarly knowledge and data? We are looking for a PhD candidate to work on the creation of hybrid workflows or architectures for knowledge engineering in scholarly domains. You will address questions such as: What are efficient knowledge engineering workflows or architectures for scholarly applications? How can we design quality criteria for the evaluation of engineered scholarly knowledge? Can we build tools that automatically recommend workflows for specific application domains? Engineering Doctorate (EngD), Improving Wind powered Reverse Osmosis
Delft University of Technology, Delft
At the forefront of tackling two of the most pressing global challenges—water scarcity and the transition to renewable energy—DOT, Delft Offshore Turbine, is driving innovative solutions. Given the expansion of offshore wind farms, there is a critical need for alternatives to traditional electrical carriers. Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) in combination with wind energy is one of the solutions, significantly reducing the CO2 footprint of traditional SWRO and producing fresh water. DOT has pioneered a unique pump technology that enables wind turbines to directly pressurize water, eliminating the intermediate step of electricity generation. This pressurized water is then utilized to power SWRO installations for desalination. However, coping with the wind variability is still a challenge. The EngD candidate will work closely together with DOT and will design, implement and test solutions to cope with the wind variability, while producing a constant flow of fresh water under acceptable pressures for transport. In addition, risk assessments, asset management plans and techno-economic evaluations will be executed to test the feasibility of the designed solutions. The candidate will combine theoretical knowledge with professional experience and apply it to pilot installations inside and outside the Netherlands. The candidate will, apart from scientific research, co-operate with the partners to identify the needs and to implement prototypes of the developed methods and tools. Regular visits to the partners is part of the project.Requirements: Need-to-haves:MSc in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering and related areasExperience with water quality, and/or water treatment/desalination technologiesIndependent, self-motivated, curiosity-driven mind, open to communicate and collaborate with peers and partnersA scientific attitude and analytical skills combined with a hands-on mentalityExcellent spoken and written English* Nice-to-haves:Laboratory/pilot plant experience, proven by previous studies and/or workKnowledge of the European contextProficiency in the Dutch language *If your mother language is not English and you do not hold a degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction, you must submit proof of English proficiency from either TOEFL (minimum total score of 100) or IELTS (minimum total score of 7.0). PhD on neuromorphic computing & engineering: algorithms & hardware architectures
TU Eindhoven University of Techology, Eindhoven
The Neuromorphic Edge Computing Systems (NECS) Lab at the Eindhoven University of Technology invites applications for one Ph.D. position from a passionate and innovative young researcher. Our mission is to overstep the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI) and neural networks, challenging the current computing paradigms by drawing inspiration from biological neural networks.Despite significant advances in AI, current systems must catch up to the animal kingdom's efficiency in processing complex, real-time tasks with minimal energy in uncertain conditions. This limitation stems from a fundamental difference in design philosophy; while nature leverages distributed processing and inherent noise tolerance, modern computing relies on deterministic, bit-perfect operations with a clear separation between memory and computation. To bridge this gap, the NECS Lab is pioneering research into brain-inspired computing models that mimic the natural neural system's computational physics. Our research entails the development of novel brain-inspired computing theories, learning systems, and the design of ultra-low-power circuits, systems, and computing architectures. We are seeking one PhD candidate interested in performing research in the following areas:Ultra-low-power Mixed-signal Circuits and Architecture: Design of novel CMOS-based architectures for spiking neural networks that embody the brain's adaptive capabilities.Spike-based Neuromorphic Hardware for Machine Intelligence: Embedding complex AI functionalities into heterogeneous neuromorphic hardware that integrates emerging technologies (e.g., ReRAM, Phase-Change Memories) with traditional CMOS for increasing the energy efficiency of embedded devices. With these research focus, the NECS lab aims to push the boundaries of energy efficiency and integration of AI-capabilities in embedded devices, paving the way for a new generation of neuro-inspired processors for efficient autonomous agents.Job DescriptionWe offer an exciting Ph.D. opportunity for a pioneering approach to neuromorphic engineering and computing, drawing inspiration from neural mechanisms observed in biological neural systems.Key responsibilities:Engage in groundbreaking research to develop advanced neuromorphic sensing, and computing systems by taking inspiration from the sensing and computing capabilities of natural neural systems.Innovate in the areas of signal encoding, processing pipelines, and embedded computer architectures to emulate bio-inspired computational models effectively.Explore and implement beyond traditional deep learning techniques, moving towards the next generation of neuromorphic technologies. This includes leveraging spiking neural networks' efficiency, parallelism, and adaptability for enhanced sensing and computing.Delve into new bio-inspired theories and connect them to hardware architectures.Requirements: A master's degree (or an equivalent university degree) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related fields, with an interest in neuromorphic computing and engineering.Has a strong background in one or more of the following:Analog mixed-signal designs, devices, and general knowledge of semiconductor physics. modeling, and electronic system design.Knows circuit simulation and VLSI design (spice, cadence, Synopsys tools).Experience with hardware architecture, FPGA, and system-level simulation is desirable.A good theoretical understanding of statistics and machine learning theory.Strong analytical skills and proficiency in programming and simulation tools.Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.Motivated to develop your teaching skills and coach students.Fluent in spoken and written English (C1 level).Salary Benefits: A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. EngD position: Construction Management and Engineering
University of Twente, Enschede
An Engineering Doctorate is an official-accredited degree as professional technological designer. During this in-depth program, you become a specialist while following a tailored post-master education programme. Further, you work with the external organization Allinq Group to develop a high-level and creative solution for the Universal Test Trench problem. The sector (e.g., represented in COB) therefore advocates for increasing the amount of information shared about the underground between contractors and network owners. Various stakeholders in the sector support the idea that data from trial trenches and recently deployed utility lines should be shared. Existing (GNSS) and new (LiDAR/photogrammetry) technologies seem to have pushed this idea toward developing a centralized approach to sharing utility data. However, what data should be shared, how it needs to be modelled, stored, and visualized remains unclear. This culminates in the following goal of this EngD, which is to: Develop a unified approach to storing, exchanging, and visualizing (test) trench information between stakeholders in the utility construction sector. We wonder: Can we develop a data model to capture the geometries and semantics of test trenches? Which registration technologies should this model be able to support? And how can data be visualized to support utility engineering activities?Requirements: Interested? We invite you to apply in case you: Are among the top M.Sc. graduates with a background in construction, management and engineering, civil engineering, or a related field; Are eager to advance your data modelling, spatial engineering, and visualisation knowledge;Have the ambition and talent to accelerate in finding solutions and crafting designs for complex technological issues;Like to work on multidisciplinary topics;Possess both Dutch and English language proficiency;Have professional communication and social skills, collaboration, initiative, and good self-reflection.Salary Benefits: We offer you a very challenging position in an inspiring multidisciplinary environment. In this time we will provide you with a tailor made post-master design program that has an educational component (~50%) as well as a design project (~50%). We offer: A salary of € 2618,- gross per month. An annual holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, and an annual year-end bonus of 8.3%.A solid pension scheme.Minimum of 29 leave days in case of full-time employment. The University of Twente is situated on a green and lively campus with lots of facilities for sports and other activities. On successfully completing the program, you will receive a certified and recognised degree. You will be entitled to use the academic degree PDEng and will be registered as a Technological Designer in the Dutch register kept by the Royal Institution of Engineers in the Netherlands (KIVI).Work Hours: 38 - 40 hours per weekAddress: Drienerlolaan 5
