PhD In-Memory Computing for efficient online learning Spiking Neural Networks
TU Eindhoven University of Techology, Eindhoven
Objective:To research, design, implement, and evaluate an ultra-low-power Spiking Neural Network (SNN) architecture that leverages in-memory computing principles for efficient online learning. Background: The field of neuromorphic computing seems to offer a transformative solution for achieving intelligence at the edge. By emulating the brain's efficient biological mechanisms through Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), neuromorphic computing systems not only promise substantial energy efficiency but also enhance real-time processing capabilities when integrated with online learning. The conventional von Neumann computing architectures, characterized by separate memory and processing units, encounter performance constraints due to the continual data transfer between these segments. This structure leads to heightened energy consumption and processing time. Additionally, the widespread reliance on energy-intensive dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) exacerbates these energy concerns, particularly when grappling with the intensive computational requirements of online learning tasks in SNNs. In response to these challenges, the research landscape is shifting. Notable innovations like IBM's TrueNorth chip, which mirrors neural networks, are emerging. Alongside these digital solutions, there's a burgeoning interest in exploring analog, hybrid, and advanced nanoelectronic devices, with a keen focus on those boasting memristive attributes. In-memory computing, which conducts calculations directly within memory storage, has become a popular design choice, further reducing energy while decreasing latency.Research Questions:How can in-memory computing principles be integrated into SNN architectures to enhance online learning capabilities? What are the trade-offs between performance, power, and accuracy when implementing in-memory online learning in SNNs?How can the inherent variability and non-ideality of in-memory devices be mitigated or exploited in SNN-based online learning systems?Significance:This research aims to push the boundaries of neuromorphic engineering by combining the strengths of SNNs and in-memory computing. The outcome has the potential to revolutionize ultra-low-power applications, especially in edge devices, wearables, and IoT, making intelligent systems more pervasive and sustainable.Requirements: Applicants must have or expect to receive a Master of Science degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.Strong background in Digital/Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuit (IC) design.Very good skills in HDL (Verilog, VHDL) and scripting languages (Python, TCL).Basic knowledge on commercial EDA tools (Cadence/Mentor Graphics).Knowledge in Neuromorphic architectures and Low power IC design would be a definite plus.Salary Benefits: A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months. You will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. €2,770 max. €3,539).A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process. An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities. An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.A Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.Work Hours: 38 hours per weekAddress: De Rondom 70

Researcher (Postdoc) Deep learning for geophysical observables extraction and inversion: Toward characterizing the Dutch sub...
University of Twente, Enschede
The global initiative to complete the energy transition by 2040 puts tremendous pressure on governments and industries. The need for any nation to know the potential of its subsurface to meet the future demand for energy and raw materials, as well as its storage capacity (e.g. CO2, H2) and associated hazards (e.g. induced seismicity, subsidence), is more critical than ever for informing exploration efforts, strategic economic planning, environmental policies, and decision-makers. The Netherlands has acquired a vast amount of geophysical data over the past 30 years. However, the formal integration and inversion of all available and complementary data have not been yet fully exploited for obtaining unifying, multi-parameter models of the subsurface. This project will develop novel ways of characterizing the physical state of the subsurface beneath the Netherlands via the formal integration of multiple geophysical (mainly seismological), geochemical/petrological and petrophysical data into a single physics-based framework. Specifically, we will establish a workflow to extract seismological observables from large seismological data sets using both existing and new Deep Learning (DL) techniques to be developed within the project. The retrieved seismological observables will be integrated with other available data sets (e.g. potential fields) and existing models to establish a common database to be inverted using an innovative multi-observable probabilistic platform. The new DL methods and workflow to extract high-quality seismic information will apply to similar data sets in other regions, opening new opportunities for analysing and using seismic records worldwide. Results will be disseminated through high-quality scientific publications, conference presentations and reports for a wide range of partners. Involvement in teaching and/or supervision of PhD projects related to the project is also expected. You will collaborate closely with researchers at Utrecht University, KNMI, and Delft University of Technology. You will be a member of a large and dynamic geophysics/computational geodynamics team of PhD students and post-doctoral fellows. PhD on Deep Learning Perception for Automotive 4D Imaging Radar
TU Eindhoven University of Techology, Eindhoven
•    Are you inspired by the prospect of shaping the future of autonomous driving?•    Are you fascinated by the latest developments in self-supervised learning and generative models?•    Are you excited to work on perception tasks for safety-critical systems using the next-generation automotive radar?•    Then apply for the PhD position on Deep Learning Perception for Automotive 4D Imaging Radar!Autonomous driving is a key application of artificial intelligence generally, and vehicle perception specifically. Contemporary autonomous driving systems utilize various sensors, such as cameras, radar, and LiDAR. Recent developments in automotive radar technology have led to the emergence of a new class of sensors, 4D Imaging Radar. This technology can be a key enabler for Level 4 and Level 5 autonomy due to its additional vertical information, high density, and robustness.Consequently, this requires the development of novel deep-learning methods that can process Imaging radar data on resource-constrained devices, and perform standard automotive perception tasks, such as object detection and collision prediction.  Moreover, due to the real-life complexity of such tasks in urban conditions, and the many edge cases that can be encountered, it is practically impossible to gather all-encompassing training data. This PhD project is designed to research various deep-learning methods to perform vehicle perception tasks, such as collision risk prediction, using imaging radar data. The aim is to increase the generalization capabilities of those prediction models for rarely occurring scenarios. To this end, it will be necessary to not only consider mathematical and technical details of deep learning but also the understanding of signal processing systems and working principles of 4D Imaging radar technology.More specifically, research tasks will include:Reviewing relevant literature from the deep learning architectures for signal processing, radar-based and computer vision-based automotive perception, and domain invariance/resilience.Designing methods for domain invariant deep representations of radar-specific embeddings.Developing learning strategies capable of learning from auxiliary simulated data for real-life applications.Collaborating on ongoing research projects that aim to implement radar-based perception methods for next-generation ADAS and autonomous driving. An ideal candidate will combine technical expertise in deep learning, signal processing, and automotive sensing. You are strongly interested in the application of next-generation radar technology and robust perception in the context of road participants' safety. Next, you have good programming experience and are passionate about artificial intelligence, computer science, and autonomous driving. The candidate will be integrated into the Mobile Perception Systems (MPS) lab within a newly forming Automated Vehicle Test Facility (AVTF). You will actively collaborate with NXP researchers.Requirements: A master's degree (or an equivalent university degree) in artificial intelligence, signal processing, computer science, or a related discipline.Demonstrable interest and/or experience in automotive sensor technologies, robotics perception, and programming.A research-oriented attitude of an ever-curious mindAbility to work in an interdisciplinary team and interested in collaborating with industrial partners.Motivated to develop teaching skills and coach students.Fluent in spoken and written English (e.g. C1 level).Salary Benefits: A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network.
PhD's on neuromorphic computing & engineering: algorithms&hardware architectures
TU Eindhoven University of Techology, Eindhoven
The Neuromorphic Edge Computing Systems (NECS) Lab at the Eindhoven University of Technology invites applications for multiple Ph.D. positions from passionate and innovative young researchers. Our mission is to overstep the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI) and neural networks, challenging the current computing paradigms by drawing inspiration from the most sophisticated system known—the human brain.Despite significant advances in AI, current systems must catch up to the animal kingdom's efficiency in processing complex, real-time tasks with minimal energy in uncertain conditions. This limitation stems from a fundamental difference in design philosophy; while nature leverages distributed processing and inherent noise tolerance, modern computing relies on deterministic, bit-perfect operations with a clear separation between memory and computation. To bridge this gap, the NECS Lab is pioneering research into brain-inspired computing models that mimic the natural neural system's computational physics. Our research entails the development of novel brain-inspired computing theories, learning systems, and the design of ultra-low-power circuits, systems, and computing architectures. We are seeking candidates for several PhD positions, each focusing on one or more of the following cutting-edge research topics:Ultra-low-power Mixed-signal Circuits and Architecture: Design of novel CMOS technologies for neural networks embodying the brain's adaptive capabilities. Projects aim to replicate the self-healing abilities of neural systems, which are distinctive traits of biological neural systems.Event-based Sensing & Computing: Development of event-based sensory perception systems, with a focus on low-power radar sensing for applications in autonomous vehicles and robotics. This research will pioneer a brain-inspired framework for active perception.Spike-based Neuromorphic Hardware for Machine Intelligence: Embedding complex AI functionalities into neuromorphic hardware augmented by emerging technologies (e.g., ReRAM, Phase-Change Memories) for increasing the energy efficiency of current deep learning models. This involves integrating cutting-edge nanomaterials into architectures optimized for AI.Bio-inspired Online Learning Algorithms: Creation of spike-based online learning algorithms for real-time adaptation to hardware degradation and input changes. This includes developing unsupervised methods for drift compensation in physical systems. With these projects, the NECS lab aims to fundamentally understand neural and cognitive processes in the AI domain. We strive to have a tremendous impact in the computer sciences, electronics, and robotics sectors, paving the way for a new generation of neuro-inspired processors for efficient autonomous agents.Job DescriptionWe offer an exciting Ph.D. opportunity for a pioneering approach to neuromorphic engineering and computing, drawing inspiration from neural mechanisms observed in the animal kingdom. These cross-disciplinary projects seek to revolutionize sensing, computing, and learning by adopting the computational primitives found in natural neural systems: the massively parallel networks of spiking neurons and adaptive synapses.Key responsibilities:Engage in groundbreaking research to develop advanced neuromorphic sensing, and computing systems by taking inspiration from the sensing and computing capabilities of natural neural systems.Innovate in the areas of signal encoding, processing pipelines, and embedded computer architectures to emulate bio-inspired computational models effectively.Explore and implement beyond traditional deep learning techniques, moving towards the next generation of neuromorphic technologies. This includes leveraging spiking neural networks' efficiency, parallelism, and adaptability for enhanced sensing and computing.Delve into new bio-inspired theories and connect them to hardware architectures.Requirements: A master's degree (or an equivalent university degree) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related fields, with an interest in neuromorphic computing and engineering.Has a strong background in one or more of the following:Analog mixed-signal designs, devices, and general knowledge of semiconductor physics, modeling, and electronic system design.Knows circuit simulation and VLSI design (spice, cadence, Synopsys tools).Experience with hardware architecture, FPGA, and system-level simulation is desirable.A good theoretical understanding of statistics and machine learning theory.Strong analytical skills and proficiency in programming and simulation tools.Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.Motivated to develop your teaching skills and coach students.Fluent in spoken and written English (C1 level).      Salary Benefits: A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months.
