1 PhD Position (1.0 FTE) in Transatlantic Environmental History
Leiden University, Leiden
The PhD candidate will become part of the LUIH Starting Grant projects “Challenging disciplinary boundaries in security cooperation and crisis governance” and “Re-Scaling Security: Histories and Practices of Trans-Local Cooperation,” led by Dr. Andrea Warnecke and Håvar Solheim, and will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Dario Fazzi. The PhD position is fully funded. The expected starting date is 1 September 2024. Project description: Within the contexts of the two interrelated LUIH Starting Grant projects, “Re-Scaling Security” specifically aims to examine the rise in cooperation among local environmental activist networks across the Atlantic, spotlighting original narratives of environmental security that have emerged over recent decades. This PhD project is meant to add fresh historical perspectives on socio-ecological threats and innovative concepts of environmental governance, particularly the ones related to bodies of water. While transnational organizations have been extensively studied, local environmental activism has not received comparable historiographical focus. The project should identify and analyze the exchanges between local environmentalist groups and organizations operating within western democratic systems so to enable further exploration of their role in reconfiguring patterns – and limits – of contemporary environmental democracy. We are thus calling for proposals that offer a historical analysis of one or more of the following dynamics: The transformation of local ecological demands into broader forms of environmental justice and rights; The contribution of local actors and networks to reshaping environmental protection as a key element of human security; The ways in which local concerns regarding environmental exploitation and contamination have brought to light extractive policies and practices. We are also receptive to other suggestions that align with the larger theme of the project. We invite research approaches that intersect environmental, diplomatic, social, cultural, and political history, enhancing the multidisciplinary nature of the project. Key responsibilities:Completion of a PhD thesis within four years;Participation in meetings of the project research group;Presentations of intermediate research results at workshops and conferences;Participation in the training programme of the Graduate School;Co-organizing workshops and conferences;Limited teaching duties in the second and third years.Requirements: Requirements for PhD candidates:An RMA or MA in history, international relations, environmental humanities, or a related field, held by time of appointment, with an MA thesis of high quality. If the degree is not yet obtained at the time of application, a statement by the applicant’s supervisor should confirm that it will be obtained by time of appointment;Knowledge of US and European environmental history;Well-developed archival and research skills;Ability to work both independently and as part of an (international) team;Excellent command of English.Good writing skillsSalary Benefits: About our organisation Since its founding in 1575, Leiden University has acquired an international reputation for excellent teaching and research. With its staff of over 800, the Faculty of Humanities provides 26 Bachelors and 27 Masters programmes for over 7,200 students based at locations in Leiden and The Hague. PhD Candidate in Political Science, focus on EU governance
Leiden University, Leiden
Key responsibilities The PhD researcher will be part of the project ‘Cultural Stereotypes in the Council of the European Union: Real Threat or just Cheap Talk?’ hosted at the Institute of Political Science and led by Dr Adina Akbik. Cultural stereotypes are often present in the political and media discourse on EU governance, e.g. ‘the lazy Greeks’, ‘the tax-dodging Italians’, ‘the stingy Dutch’, and so forth. Yet despite their frequency in public rhetoric, there is limited research on how stereotypes affect the behaviour of civil servants working in EU institutions. The project aims to examine how cultural stereotypes affect cooperation among national civil servants participating in Council working parties and committees. The ideal candidates will have strong qualitative and quantitative methods skills, a familiarity with the EU institutional framework, and a keen interest in the topic of the project. As part of their PhD topic, they will be expected to investigate the prevalence of cultural stereotypes in the Council, as well as their impact (if any) on the way in which national representatives make decisions. As part of the position, candidates will receive research training in EU studies as well as advanced experimental methods required to analyse the role of stereotypes on behaviour. Candidates will be expected to teach two courses per year, usually as a tutorial instructor.Requirements: Selection criteriaApplicants must hold (or be near completing) a (research) master’s degree in political science, international relations, public administration/public policy, or EU studies with excellent grades. They have written (or are near completing) a master’s thesis.Applicants have extensive background knowledge of EU institutions and decision-making as demonstrated by a minor in EU studies, the completion of a bachelor or master thesis on the topic, or relevant work experience in the field.Applicants must have prior training in and a good command of qualitative methods (content analysis) and quantitative methods, as well as experience or an interest working with survey experiments.Applicants are passionate about political science research and have a strong affiliation with the project theme.Applicants meet the English language requirements of the Graduate School of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. A working understanding of other EU languages is an advantage.Salary Benefits: Terms and conditions The position starts on 1 September 2024. We offer a full-time PhD position. Leiden University, Leiden
Key responsibilities The PhD researchers will be part of the project ‘EUROTYPES: The Impact of Cultural Stereotypes in European Multi-Level Policy Enforcement’, funded by the European Research Council (2024-2028) and led by Dr Adina Akbik. The project aims to explore the role of cultural stereotypes among people involved in the direct implementation of EU policy (‘multi-level policy enforcement’) via EU agencies. More information about the project is available at https://www.adinaakbik.eu/projects/2702-eurotypes The ideal candidates will have strong qualitative and solid quantitative methods skills, a familiarity with EU agencies, and a keen interest in the topic of the project. Together with the project team, they will be expected to investigate the prevalence of cultural stereotypes in selected EU agencies (see below), as well as their potential impact on the way in which civil servants make decisions. PhD Candidate Mood Disorders in Parkinson's disease
Leiden University, Leiden
Project description Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily known for its motor symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and bradykinesia. However, PD also encompasses a range of non-motor symptoms that significantly impact patients' quality of life. These non-motor symptoms are increasingly recognized as critical components of the disease, profoundly affecting both clinical management and patient well-being. One non-motor symptom that presents a multifaceted challenge for both diagnosis and treatment, is anxiety. Anxiety in PD is often poorly recognised due to diagnostic imprecision, overlap with other symptoms of PD, and underreporting of symptoms. Therefore, a crucial step towards optimizing treatment is a better understanding of different subtypes of anxiety and their associations with other demographic or PD-specific factors. In this PhD project you will investigate the different subtypes of anxiety in PD and characterize their potentially distinct underlying pathophysiology. Moving away from a one-size-fits-all view of anxiety and instead focusing on individual subtype characteristics may allow for the development of tailored therapies. Key responsibilities The PhD student will design and conduct quantitative studies, analyse behavioural and (functional) MRI data, and write scientific articles which will culminate in a dissertation. You will present your results at national and international conferences. About 10% of the time will be spent on teaching, such as supervising BSc and MSc thesis projects. During your PhD you will be following several courses on scientific writing, research integrity and topics related to your thesis. Within the department, this project will fall within the hub theme ‘Diagnostics and interventions for neurocognitive disorders.’ You will work on this project under supervision of (assistant) professors in neuropsychology: Dr. Julie Hall, Dr. Marit Ruitenberg and Prof. Hanneke Hulst. In addition, you will closely collaborate with the neurologists from the neurology department at LUMC.Requirements: Selection CriteriaA (research) master’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, or medical sciences (or similar), e.g. neuropsychology, cognitive neuroscience, medicine, human movement sciences, or closely related study programme.Affinity and/or experience with the research topic and the target population of the project.Strong analytical, methodological, and statistical skills, and preferably programming skills in R.Good communication skills, both oral and written, in Dutch and English.Experience with working with patient populations is preferred.Salary Benefits: Our Faculty/Institute The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences consists of five institutes: Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, Political Science, and Psychology. PhD candidate to unravel the complex interplay between social anxiety and ADHD in youth
Leiden University, Leiden
Are you interested in psychopathology in youth, and motivated to unravel complex relationships in brain and behavior using multiple techniques and approaches? Consider joining our team as a PhD student and gain the skills and knowledge to conduct cutting-edge research disentangling the interplay between social anxiety disorder (SAD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in youth. Applications are invited for a four-year PhD position under the supervision of Dr. Janna Marie Bas-Hoogendam, Dr. Bianca Boyer and prof. Michiel Westenberg at the Developmental and Educational Psychology Unit of Leiden University. We are looking for an enthusiastic student who would like to develop their career in the field of clinical developmental neuropsychology. Project description Co-occurring disorders are highly prevalent among youth with ADHD and the existence of other comorbidities alongside ADHD exacerbates the severity of symptoms. Furthermore, treating ADHD is expensive, with costs doubling when comorbid disorders are present. More insight in comorbidity in youth with ADHD is thus important. Studies reveal that SAD is the most common anxiety disorder found in adults with ADHD. Conversely, ADHD has been identified as a possible risk factor for the development of SAD: research conducted in SAD patients shows that childhood ADHD (in particular, the inattentive type) is associated with SAD and more severe social phobia symptoms. However, study sizes are small and literature on SAD in ADHD is sparse. The nature of this relationship, the development of symptoms and potential treatment options are largely unknown. In this project, we aim to (1) gain a deeper understanding of the causes and characteristics of SAD among adolescents and young adults who suffer from ADHD, as well as (2) evaluate the efficacy of two different treatments for SAD in this population. To address these aims, this PhD project will employ a range of measures including self-report, parent-report, focus groups, and neuroimaging data (MRI), in order to study SAD in youth with ADHD in a comprehensive way. Furthermore, two different treatments will be studied, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and fMRI-based real-time neurofeedback. In a series of studies, we first aim to gain a better understanding of the relationship between SAD and ADHD in youth, at the clinical and neurobiological level. These studies are based on existing, already collected data (for example, cross-sectional clinical data of adolescents with and without ADHD; MRI data of adolescents with ADHD, SAD or both), and new data which will be acquired by the PhD-student. Second, we aim to evaluate the effectiveness of two different treatments. The first study involves a proof-of-principle study developing real-time fMRI-based neurofeedback training for SAD in youth with and without ADHD. The second study aims to determine the effectiveness of CBT targeting self-esteem in adolescents with ADHD. The PhD candidate is in the exceptional position that they can decide which of these studies they want to use to shape their own research line in their dissertation. The candidate will receive training in a variety of methods and will have the opportunity to pursue their own research interests in depth. This way, the successful applicant can shape their own dissertation. Furthermore, the project provides ample opportunities for interdisciplinary research, outreach, and open science. The candidate is also expected to contribute to teaching within the Department of Developmental and Educational Psychology (10 % of time; for example, supervision BSc and MSc thesis projects), and will thus also gain experience in this respect.Requirements: The qualifications needed for this position include: A completed or upcoming (before September 2024) master's degree (preferable Research Master) in Psychology, Family studies, Cognitive neuroscience, or a related field;Good analytical and statistical skills, with prior experience acquiring and analyzing fMRI data being a plus;A passion for developmental (neuro)science that has real implications in clinical practice;A collaborative mindset, openness to learning new skills, and willingness to share knowledge;Proficiency in Dutch, as you will be interacting with youth;Excellent organizational and communicational skills and attention to detail;Excitement about setting up and coordinating multiple studies and keen to shape the content of the dissertation yourselves; It is important to note that the role might requires flexible availability, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs of study participants in data collection. However, these hours are compensated during the week, and the team highly values a healthy work-life balance.Salary Benefits: Our organization The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences consists of five institutes: Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, Political Science, and Psychology.
