The Marketing and Consumer Behaviour group at Wageningen University and Research is looking for a PhD candidate in the area of consumer behaviour change, in the context of reusable packaging. This PhD project is part of the NWO funded project Re2Pack. Reusable packaging systems (RPS) have promising environmental benefits compared to single-use packaging, yet have been subject to less integrated attention in science and society, potentially due to the complexity of the required system change. Your responsibility includes the examination of: factors that influence acceptability of RPS;behavioural interventions that stimulate a change in consumers’ habits in favour of RPS;brand image and product use in RPS.Combined, this will provide key insights into consumers’ response to RPS and concrete intervention elements that can help promote RPS among consumers. It is expected that you will not only develop research skills and competences for the PhD project but that you will also contribute and learn from actively participating in the Re2Pack project. You will work in an interdisciplinary team, together with PhD candidates who focus on design and value chain. PhD position in Tackling Fixophobia: Addressing the consumer side in the move towards a repair economy for electronic products
Wageningen UR (University & Research centre), Wageningen
Have you ever wondered why consumers tend to replace their electronic devices instead of repairing them? Are you motivated to delve into the psychological processes underlying consumers’ decisions regarding the repair (or not) of their owned products? Are you enthusiastic about developing and empirically testing innovative (marketing) ways to motivate consumers towards repair? If so, then we have the perfect opportunity for you! The Marketing and Consumer Behaviour group of Wageningen University is looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious PhD candidate to fulfil an essential position in the NWO funded project “Tackling fixophobia: Improving repair practices for consumer electronics”. The project aims to develop a circular economy for consumer electronics. In today’s linear economy, the rapid replacement of consumer electronics leads to CO2-emissions, resource scarcity, e-waste and pollution, thereby providing important environmental and societal challenges. Extending the lifetimes of consumer electronics is essential to tackle these challenges. A repair economy in which all value chain actors (incl. consumers) adopt repair practices can lead to such extended product lifetimes. Yet, currently all relevant actors experience barriers that withhold them from trusting, accepting, and adopting repair practices, leading to ‘Fixophobia’. In general, the “Tackling Fixophobia” project aims to provide the much-needed scientific theories, societal tools, and repair system innovations to encourage a multi-actor system change and enhance trust, acceptance and adoption of repair practices for consumer electronics. To achieve societal impact, we collaborate intensely with a unique consortium, including all actors in the consumer electronics value chain: Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), (design) consultancies, retail, repair organisations, consumer organisations, network/trade organisations, and waste organisation. Three PhD students will work on this project (for more information, see: NWO-KIC Circular Economy). In the current PhD position, you will work together with all project partners, and investigate the consumer perspective. Your responsibility will be to examine the factors that influence consumers’ repair behaviour, to develop a taxonomy of marketing and service innovations for repair, and to develop interventions that stimulate consumers to engage in repair practices. This will result in the development of a marketing repair tool and a thorough understanding of the consumer perspective. Moreover, in the final project you will intensively collaborate with the design (TU Delft), value chain (University of Maastricht) and law partners (Erasmus University) to together develop an integrated framework on repair. Interdisciplinary research is thus a valuable part of the project. You will work here The Marketing and Consumer Behaviour group is one of the leading research and teaching groups in the fields of marketing (research) and consumer behavior related to food, sustainability, and agribusiness. The research is led by Dr. Ilona de Hooge. You will be co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Hans van Trijp and Prof. Dr. Ruth Mugge (Delft University). As a PhD candidate, you will be enrolled in the Wageningen University Graduate School (WASS). The Graduate school provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff, and a mentor. You will also participate in a Doctorate Education Programme, in which you further develop your research, teaching, and interdisciplinary skills.Requirements: You have: a completed MSc University degree;background in consumer behavior (e.g. consumer science, marketing, social psychology, behavioral economics). Other backgrounds will not be considered;a high level of and interest in sustainable/circular marketing/consumer behavior;statistical/ modelling skills and experience with quantitative data collection (survey research, lab and natural experimental research are parts of this project);an interest in conducting qualitative research (conducting interviews is part of this project);openness and willingness to collaborate with people from other scientific disciplines, and the ability to interact effectively with both academic and diverse stakeholder audiences;clear scientific ambition in the conduct and publication of the research (the project is expected to result in a PhD thesis and scientific publications);ability to work independently as well as in a team, take initiative, and work towards results in a systematic way;the curiosity and motivation to address important real-world problems through rigorous and ambitious academic inquiry;an interest in student-focused teaching (10% of your position will include teaching);fluency in English language. For this position your command of the English language is expected to be at C1 level. PhD position - Salt marsh survival
Wageningen UR (University & Research centre), Wageningen
Are you passionate about understanding how salt marshes survive in changing marine conditions and human influences? Do you want to contribute to predicting their development for coastal protection? If yes, then this may be the perfect opportunity for you! The Hydrology and Environmental Hydraulics group at Wageningen University and Research is looking for a PhD candidate to investigate the dynamics of salt marshes, with the aim of predicting salt marsh development and determining crucial factors for coastal protection. Survival of salt marshes depends on feedbacks between plant growth and sediment accumulation, which in turn are governed by conditions at sea. On a global scale, these marine conditions are subject to changes dominated by sealevel rise and intensified storms. Storms play an ambivalent, understudied role in the salt marsh sediment balance by delivering sediment, and cause lateral salt marsh erosion. Detailed processes controlling the long-term residual sediment exchange between salt marshes and the adjacent tidal basin are still poorly understood. This PhD project takes up the challenge to simulate and predict salt marsh development governed by changing marine conditions and human influence, and, ultimately, to determine prerequisites for salt marsh survival and the resulting coastal protection. The PhD project is co-financed by the NWO-VICI project “Deltas out of shape: regime changes of sediment dynamics in tide-influenced deltas” and the NWO-Perspective programme “Wadden Sea and Estuaries: system Dynamics and sediment management under climate change” (WadSED). Phd position - Evaluation of restoration measures for fish in the River Meuse
Wageningen UR (University & Research centre), Wageningen
The Aquaculture and Fisheries group at Wageningen University is looking for an enthusiastic candidate who is interested to advance science by evaluating river restoration measures in the River Meuse (the Netherlands), with the aim to establish the role of habitat quality and connectivity for more resilient and robust freshwater fish populations. Fish are an essential element in the ecological functioning of aquatic ecosystems and have species-specific habitat requirements to fulfil their life cycle. For this reason, fish is one of the biological quality elements of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) to assess the ecological status of rivers, lakes and estuaries. However, wide-scale habitat changes, caused by intensive human use of freshwaters, have diminished the ecological quality of water bodies. Large rivers have been particularly affected by this. These rivers serve many purposes, such as inland water transport, requiring minimum depths and stable water levels, and have been modified accordingly, e.g. by the building of weirs, protecting banks and cutting of meanders. Protection against flooding of rivers, e.g. through the construction of dykes, led to a further reduction in the natural dynamics, and hence to decreased ecological quality. This led to specialised river fishes becoming rare or even locally extinct. To improve the ecological quality of the Meuse River Rijkswaterstaat (the executive agency of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management) has realised and planned a large number of diverse river restoration projects. These projects serve to explore which type and extent of measures are most effective in improving ecological quality within the context of the Water Framework directive (WFD), and how such measures could be optimised. Within this project the focus will be on the fish community, especially on species that prefer flowing waters (rheophilic species). One aim is to identify bottlenecks in the life cycle of these species, which requires monitoring of the occurrence of fishes in relation to habitat characteristics. Where possible a BACI (before-after-impact-control) approach will be applied. Within this project, you will work as a PhD student on developing new knowledge on the interactions between connectivity, quality and quantity of habitats for rheophilic fishes using proven and newly developed techniques, such as fyke monitoring, acoustic telemetry and mapping habitat conditions. Your duties and responsibilities include: perform fish monitoring and telemetry in collaboration with students, perform habitat assessments, and rigorously collect, store and process data;analysing this data critically, using advanced statistical techniques and with deep knowledge of the biological context.;collaborate with relevant stakeholders (in particular Rijkswaterstaat and regional water boards) to ensure relevance, enhance learning and enlarge data collection;lead a team of students/collaborators in the field. You will work here Research training and education at PhD level at Aquaculture and Fisheries group is integrated in the research program of the Graduate School ‘Wageningen Institute of Animal Sciences’ (WIAS), which aims to contribute to the sustainability of human-animal interactions through fundamental and strategic research. The aquaculture experts within AFI focus on fish nutrition and health in aquaculture production systems, while the fisheries and ecology experts study the ecology, biodiversity, and conservation of freshwater fishes, and population ecology and fisheries of marine fish species.Requirements: You have:excellent organizational skills, enabling coordination among scientists from different disciplines;strong communication and networking skills to facilitate collaboration with scientists from various disciplines as well as with stakeholders;interdisciplinary training or experience across social and natural sciences, which is an advantage;strong scientific writing skills (evident from your thesis and/or publications). You also possess:a masters degree in the field of biology, fisheries, aquatic ecology , physical geography, environmental science, water management or equivalent;a background in quantitative methods and statistical analysis; programming skills (Python, R, Matlab, or any related language), previous experience with large data analysis and/or GIS are an advantage;excellent command of written and spoken English;ability to speak Dutch which will be an advantage, also a willingness to learn Dutch is essential for effective collaboration with stakeholders;the qualifications to meet all the entry requirements of the WUR PhD programme. In our international working environment there is an increasing amount of communication in English. PhD Position in Synthetic Biology
Wageningen UR (University & Research centre), Wageningen
Have you ever thought about the questions, “What is life?” and “Can we create life-like systems?”. Are you excited about the prospect of building artificial entities, using basic molecular components, that can mimic vital characteristics of living systems and have further biotechnological potential? Are you a creative thinker, eager to tackle an exciting synthetic biology project using state-of-the-art facilities in a multidisciplinary and a collaborative department? If so, this might be the perfect PhD position for you! What will you do?develop and characterize phase-separating peptides aimed at achieving multi-compartmentalization within cell-mimicking vesicles;use and design on-chip microfluidic systems for vesicle production and controlled experimentation;perform fluorescence (confocal) microscopy and image analysis to study process dynamics;utilize physical chemistry techniques (scattering, AFM, spectroscopy, etc.) to complement the microscopy and lab-on-a-chip research;get involved in collaborative synthetic cell-related research with other consortium members.Project description Living cells exhibit extensive sub-compartmentalization to regulate and communicate between thousands of interconnected biochemical reactions taking place within the cytoplasm. Along with well-known membrane-bound compartments, phase-separated membraneless organelles have been identified in recent years to play an equally important role in these processes. In this project, we will utilize coacervate-based strategy to form communicative membraneless compartments within cell-mimicking vesicles, with each of the compartments acting as distinct functional biochemical units. Being able to maintain distinct reaction hubs within vesicles will constitute an important step towards building intracellular communication networks. We will use a bioengineering approach, applying our microfluidic and protein engineering toolbox to design scalable multi-compartmentalization capable of organizing the intracellular reaction networks and pave a path towards complex synthetic cells.
