PhD Candidate on defining and improving interpersonal understanding in dialogues
Tilburg University, Tilburg
The Department of Communication and Cognition at Tilburg University is looking for an enthusiastic PhD researcher on defining and improving interpersonal understanding in dialogues.Successful communication heavily relies on our ability to imagine ourselves in another person’s shoes. Whether we are communicating with loved-ones, friends, colleagues, or with medical specialists, we effortlessly try to take our interlocutor’s perspective to come to understand each other and to reach our communicative goals. These perspective taking acts are often successful in helping us to fulfill our communicative needs. Often, but not always. Just like understanding, misunderstanding is a natural part of our communication, and miscommunications occur more frequently than we think or wish that they do. In fact, studies have shown that we systematically overestimate how well we communicate and, thus, understand each other in the conversation. Given the far reaching personal and social consequences misunderstandings can have, it is surprising that we still know relatively little about whether, when and how interlocutors build interpersonal understanding in their conversations. The purpose of this PhD project is to create a comprehensive understanding of what interpersonal understanding entails for interlocutors, whether and how it is co-created by interlocutors within the discourse, and what facilitates or hampers its establishment. This project thus attempts to create a holistic approach in examining not only wat makes interlocutors feel they understand each other, but also whether those feelings correspond to reality, and how interlocutors could improve their interpersonal understanding. This will be done by combining insights and methods from (social) psychology, sociology and (health) communication sciences, using a variety of research methods ranging from interviews to surveys and (observational) lab experiments. The focus will lie on interpersonal, organizational and medical conversations, so that you can take into account the different social dynamics that might impact interlocutors’ interpersonal understanding in dialogue. Not only will you focus on the (verbal) content of communication, but also on the manner (i.e., non-verbal and paralinguistic information) by which the content is relayed. You will also test the impact of different conversation techniques on interlocutors’ ability to achieve (better) interpersonal understanding. You will write a dissertation on the combined studies. We also ask you to spend 10% of your time on teaching in the department. The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Communication and Cognition (DCC) and they will work together with researchers who are experts on interpersonal communication (e.g., perspective taking, empathy, non-verbal communication, eye-tracking, health communication, feeling heard, and active listening). Researchers in our department explore social and cognitive aspects of human interaction through a multidisciplinary approach, combining careful experimentation with survey methods, interviews, corpus analyses and computational modelling. The research group consists of about 80 researchers covering a broad range of topics relevant for cognition and communication, and this includes approximately 20 PhD students. Core research domains include (in alphabetical order) communication and technology, cross-cultural communication, information visualization, language production, new media design, social media research, and non-verbal communication.Requirements: We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a (research) master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as (health) communication sciences, (social) psychology, sociology, or a related field. You should have a strong interest in doing research in general and on this topic in particular. We expect you to be pro-active and have good organizational skills, and to be able to work and think independently but also collaborate with others. Knowledge of and experience with both (advanced) quantitative and qualitative research and data analytic techniques is a plus, as well as a willingness to further develop these skills. We also expect you to have a professional attitude with a strong commitment to integrity and research ethics.Salary Benefits: This is a position for 0.8 – 1.0 fte (32 – 40 hours per week) of full working hours. PhD in Psychometrics/Methodology and Statistics
Tilburg University, Tilburg
Project descriptionIn this project, you will be carrying out psychometric research with the aim to write several articles that are publishable in peer-reviewed journals and present your work on national and international conferences. Your research combines modern psychometrics, including new data technologies, with practical assessment issues. You will become part of the Department of Methodology and Statistics and will join an active research group in psychometrics. This project is supervised by dr. Jesper Tijmstra, dr. Maria Bolsinova, and prof. Jeroen Vermunt.BackgroundWith the advance of computerized assessments, process data such as response times are now commonly available when respondents take psychological or educational tests. Recently, psychometric models have been developed that make use of response times to improve the precision with which ability is measured. While these models allow for an impactful improvement in measurement quality if their assumptions are met, there are important threats to validity when assumptions of the model about the behaviour of response times do not hold. For example, it is often assumed that there is a linear relationship between speed and ability, which is also sometimes assumed to be the same for every group that is studied. When these assumptions are not met, researchers may unknowingly draw the wrong conclusions based on their analyses.Unfortunately, these threats are commonly ignored in practice when models that include response times are used. With international large-scale assessment programs such as the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) moving towards adopting such response time models, it is becoming crucially important that tools are developed for assessing the validity of these models. Since the results of these programs have far-reaching practical consequences for educational policy and the comparison of countries, these tools will need to be developed before a wide-scale adoption of these methods can be defended. This project focuses on the development and application of exactly these tools. As a PhD candidate on this project, you will master a range of advanced psychometric models that incorporate response time for the measurement of ability, and work on the development and application of methods for testing the validity of these models, with a focus on large-scale educational measurement settings. With this, the project will provide a notable contribution to safeguarding and improving the quality of measurement in these important settings. Your positionWe are looking for a talented and ambitious PhD candidate in methodology and statistics to develop and apply novel psychometric models that make use of response times for the purpose of measuring ability, with a focus on large-scale educational assessment. The position also involves contributions to teaching, giving the candidate the opportunity to build a teaching portfolio during the PhD project. The position and the environment in which the candidate will be embedded provide an optimal starting point for an academic career in academia in general and psychometrics and statistics in particular. The candidate will follow a customized track of graduate courses as part of the Interuniversity Graduate School of Psychometrics and Sociometrics (IOPS) program, which will further develop the candidate’s research skills, background knowledge, and network.Your responsibilities  Your research work includes literature reviews, developing and extending statistical methodologies, analysing theoretical & practical properties, conducting simulations, analysing empirical data, and writing software. You will prepare scientific articles to be published in international journals, present key findings at national and international scientific conferences, and write a dissertation. You will contribute to Open Science and Team Science. You will actively participate in the Department of Methodology and Statistics. You will contribute to education and supervision (e.g. supervising bachelor’s theses and research skills groups).Requirements: Your backgroundAn ideal candidate should have sound knowledge of psychometrics (including some familiarity with item response theory) and statistics, programming skills and affinity with research methods and techniques. PhD in Psychometrics/Methodology and Statistics: Psychometric innovations for measurement in adaptive learning systems
Tilburg University, Tilburg
Project descriptionIn this project, you will be carrying out psychometric research with the aim to write several articles that are publishable in peer-reviewed journals and present your work on national and international conferences. Your research combines modern psychometrics, including new data technologies, with learning analytics and educational technology. You will become part of the Department of Methodology and Statistics and will join an active research group in psychometrics. This project is supervised by dr. Maria Bolsinova, dr. Matthieu Brinkhuis (Utrecht University) and prof. Jeroen Vermunt.BackgroundOne of the most promising ambitions in educational technology is the move towards large-scale personalized learning enabled by the development of online adaptive learning systems. These systems dynamically adjust the level of practice and instructional material based on the individual student's abilities. Adaptive learning systems aim to make tailor-made education available to everyone and to improve both the learning process and the learning outcomes. To optimize feedback, instructions, and learning material, one needs to have continuously updated, accurate and reliable measures of the students’ changing abilities. This makes measurement one of the central issues in adaptive learning. However, the adaptive, dynamic, and large-scale nature of online learning systems poses challenges for traditional measurement models and algorithms. This project is devoted to developing and evaluating innovative computationally efficient algorithms for monitoring ability in adaptive learning systems. The main focus of the project is on incorporating process data (e.g., response times, number of actions and type of action sequences, eye-tracking data, hint usage, mouse movement data) into measurement in adaptive learning systems. Existing algorithms for tracking ability which incorporate process data make strong assumptions about the relationship between ability and process data, which do not necessarily hold in practice. New methods are needed for evaluating how quality of measurement is affected when the assumptions behind the existing models and algorithms are violated. Furthermore, more flexible methods which would take individual differences in test-taking behavior into account need to be developed. As a PhD candidate on this project, you will work on development and application of such methods. With this, the project will contribute to the advancement of psychometrics in optimally handling dynamic learning settings and making the most of process data. As such it will build the foundations for developing learning systems in which measurement is rooted in psychometric theory and where different sources of information about the students are combined for better personalization and for providing teachers and students with reliable information about their progress.Your positionWe are looking for a talented and ambitious PhD candidate in psychometrics to develop and apply innovative psychometric methods and algorithms for measurement in online adaptive learning systems, with a focus on using process data. You will contribute to education and supervision (e.g. supervising bachelor’s theses and research skills groups).Requirements: Your backgroundCandidates can come from a wide range of backgrounds, including methodology and statistics, psychometrics, quantitative psychology, educational measurement, educational technology, learning analytics, data science, artificial intelligence, or computer science. In addition, an ideal candidate should have: Programming and data analytic skills (e.g., R, Python, or others)Interest in conducting high-quality research with societal relevance Interest in developing and applying advanced statistical methodsCommunication and cooperation skills and willingness to work in a teamProject management and organization skillsInterest in open science and team scienceProficiency in English, including academic writingFurthermore, the candidate should have (nearly) completed a Master’s degree with excellent academic results, for example in one of the fields mentioned above. Increasing your valueWith us, you will find everything you need to maximize your potential and development.
